Susumu Tonegawa, a researcher at the Basel Institute for Immunology from 1972 to 1981, is awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for his function on antibody gene segments. His fundamental discoveries later make feasible the production of humanized antibodies. The first director is Niels Kaj Jerne, who later receives a Nobel Prize for medicine.
